Sparx FIRE Grinding Ring – more glide with full grip
FIRE stands for “Flat Inside Radius Edges”. The patented ring grinds a flat-bottom hollow: the edges have the same radius as with the normal Radius Ring, but the bottom of the hollow is flat. According to Sparx, this means you stand more on the ice instead of in the ice – which gives you more glide.
With the FIRE Ring, the edges are ground on a radius. According to Sparx, this makes it more forgiving than other flat-bottom hollows.
How to read the sizes
According to Sparx, a FIRE Ring offers the grip of the same-size radius and the glide of a radius around 3/16" larger:
- 3/8" FIRE: grip like 3/8", glide like 9/16"
- 1/2" FIRE: grip like 1/2", glide like 11/16"
- 5/8" FIRE: grip like 5/8", glide like 13/16"
- 3/4" FIRE: grip like 3/4", glide like 15/16"
Ring life
According to Sparx, a grinding ring lasts on average for around 60 pairs of skates – calculated with three cycles per sharpening. If you sharpen with more cycles, it will be fewer pairs. A chip in the ring stores the remaining ring life. The machine displays it and tells you when the ring needs to be replaced.
Compatibility
For the Sparx skate sharpeners ES100, ES200 and Sharpener 3 (ES300).
Good to know
- Sparx does not recommend the FIRE Ring for goalies. According to Sparx, goalies need a deep hollow for powerful pushes and getting back into position quickly.
- You have been skating a classic hollow so far and are not sure? Then, according to Sparx, stay with the Radius Ring or ask us.
